I still owe money, to the money, to the money I owe…

So. I booked tickets. Flights. A holiday. Overseas. Not here.

Yep.

I don’t have any money, and I have always “lived within my means” – with a serious fashion habit that sometimes threatens my mostly pretty austere tendencies.

But the other night, I did it. I booked flights to and from Argentina. Our national carrier recently reopened a direct route to Buenos Aires and were marketing with some great deals. So, I took the bait.

I’m off to Argentina in late March 2016.

And the very next morning I freaked out. I was thinking maybe I would have to delay the start of my Masters until B semester. And then it got worse! I got an email letting me know I won the first scholarship I applied for! And it almost covers my first semester tuition for my Masters. But I would have to surrender it if I did that.

And that is never a good look when you are applying for more funding later. But, more to the point, the paper I REALLY want to do is being taught in the first semester, and I had FOMO.

However, how cool is that? I won an academic scholarship! Judged totally on grades. Go me.

In a panic, I emailed the postgrad adviser for my department. And he was so cool. I can go. I will go. And it will be bliss. I haven’t travelled much at all since my eldest was born. We will find a way to work my readings around my absence. My favourite lecturer is teaching the paper, as well! Double-triple whammy πŸ™‚

“Bloodbuzz Ohio”

Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I’ll lift my shirt up
Stand up straight at the foot of your love
I’ll lift my shirt upI was carried to Ohio in a swarm of bees
I never married but Ohio don’t remember meLay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too far
Lay my head on the hood of your car
I take it too farI still owe money to the money to the money I owe
I never thought about love when I thought about home
I still owe money to the money to the money I owe
The floors are falling out from everybody I know

I’m on a bloodbuzz
Yes I am
I’m on a blood…buzz
I’m on a bloodbuzz
God I am
I’m on a blood…buzz

(This was just an excuse to post one of my favourite songs from this decade!) Isn’t it fab? And I love the message about ‘going back’, change, including relationship changes (friends and others) and the way we feel about it all…

  1. Well I’ve said it before and I am sure I will say it again. You.frickin. Rock. This is AMAZING!! Just casually slip in that you have a scholarship – because …you frickin rock. And now you’re off to Buenos Aires um because well, you frickin rock Paula!!! πŸ™πŸ»πŸ‘πŸ»πŸŒ΄βœˆοΈ amazing!

    • Well. I keep fkn good company, owlie. My friends here have held me up when I was close to drowning. Thanks.

My exchange daughter lives up north in Mercedes, Corrientes. We hosted her parents when they visited last year, and they insist on a return visit. Iguazu Falls is just a couple of hours up the road, and Chile is also tempting. Only two weeks, but I am gonna enjoy every minute!

      • I want to enjoy it with you – lots and lots of pictures are must!
You’re not drowning, right now, this my darling is being ending fabulous!!! Quite right too 😍😘

  2. Woo hoo… how exciting!! I think 2016 may just be your year!!

  3. Congrats on the scholarship!!! And good for you for booking the trip. Every now and again you just have to live life and enjoy it and not worry about the money.

  4. Travel is amazing therapy! Enjoy yourself. I’m on the other side of the world right now and so traveling mostly in Europe, Middle East, Northern Africa and Southeast Asia, but when we return to North America (eventually) Argentina is high on my list of travel locations! Be sure to tell us all about it.

    • Cheers, LPAW. There just hasn’t been a lot of funds for this as the kids were growing up. I ensured they got plenty of opportunities for travel (amongst other things) and we had a ginormous mortgage for most of that period. Then, just as it looked like we had conquered a lot of the hard slog of getting financially stable, he sold the goose that was finally starting to lay the golden eggs! The rest is (well chronicled/overshared here on this blog) history. But I chucked it in the fuckit bucket and did it anyway. Sometimes you just gotta, hey? Make sure you remember to visit Down Under, too. We’re worth it!

  5. I understand completely. I finally agreed to accept my friend’s offer to pay for me and my girls to go away at Christmas. My kids don’t know. It will be their present to open on Christmas Day. It is still going to cost me a lot when I am there for 10 days but you have to live and I feel like I so need to get away and do something nice for me and my children.

Congratulations on your scholarship. So happy for you and excited you are going to a great destination. Have fun and enjoy!!!!!

  6. OMG that is so awesome! I love it when good things happen to good people πŸ˜„

  8. I am expecting your social media to blow up during this trip! I guess I won’t be visiting NZ late March 2016 then… πŸ˜‰ so happy for you, Paula. Congratulations on the well-deserved scholarship, too! ❀

  9. This reminds me of a meme I saw recently online that said “A job will fill your pockets, but travel will fill your soul”. I’m very happy for you Paula, you so deserve for next year to be filled with exciting and fun new adventures, fill your heart with new memories and experiences! Watch out Argentina, our awesome girl is coming to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and she’s all outta bubblegum! Lol xx

    • For sure. The meme I saw said “Travel while you’re young and able. Don’t worry about the money, just make it work. Experience is far more valuable than money will ever be.” Obvious. But I needed to hear it again. Thanks KJ. Always important to enrich your soul πŸš„πŸŒŽ

  10. This is wonderful. Have a fantastic trip. I agree with those above, this just might be your year! Xoxo Jules

  11. I’ve always wanted to see Salta, Argentina. Go for me? Xxoo

  12. I know I’m late to this party…but wow, and YAY YOU! Fantastic work to achieve the scholarship, and book the trip! Hoping you have a fabulous 2016.
